Houston City College Extends Four-Year Bachelor’s Programs

HOUSTON, TX — Houston Community College has taken historic steps to redefine its role in Texas higher education. Following a pivotal 6-3 vote by the Board of Trustees, the institution officially dropped "Community" from its name, becoming Houston City College. This structural rebranding underscores the college's ongoing evolution from a traditional two-year school into an institution that grants four-year baccalaureate degrees.

The rebranding efforts align directly with the college’s ongoing initiative to expand its bachelor's degree program catalog, ensuring local students have access to affordable, workforce-aligned four-year credentials.

The Evolution of the Bachelor's Programs

The college’s foray into four-year education began after Texas passed legislation allowing community colleges to offer specific baccalaureate degrees to fill critical regional employment gaps. HCC initially launched advanced technology and healthcare tracks. Building on that momentum, the institution moved forward with plans to add three new bachelor's programs to its roster.

The initial and newly planned bachelor's degree programs focus heavily on technical fields, healthcare, and corporate operations:

1. Artificial Intelligence & Robotics

• Degree Type: Bachelor of Applied Technology (B.A.T.)
• The Focus: Designed in partnership with tech giants like Intel, Microsoft, and AWS, this program bridges the gap between basic data coding and advanced intelligent systems. Students dive into machine learning, automation, and data science, preparing them for the rapidly accelerating tech sector in Houston.

2. Healthcare Management

• Degree Type: Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.)
• The Focus: Anchored primarily at the Coleman College for Health Sciences (and available online via the Global Online Campus), this track serves as a seamless pathway for students holding an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in a medical or business field. It focuses on healthcare operations, finance, regulations, and leadership, preparing graduates for managerial roles without requiring a clinical nursing track.

3. Expansion Programs: Business Management, Cyber, and Nursing

To round out its core baccalaureate offerings, the college structured plans to introduce three additional strategic programs:

• Business Management: A program tailored to local corporate operations and entrepreneurship.
• Cybersecurity: Expanding on the existing network infrastructure tracks to combat modern digital threats.
• Nursing (RN-to-BSN): A crucial baccalaureate pathway designed to help licensed associate-degree nurses achieve their four-year credentials to meet strict hospital hiring standards.

Academic Structure & Transferability:

Each baccalaureate program requires a total of 120 semester credit hours. This includes 42 hours of the standard Texas general education core curriculum and 78 hours of program-specific coursework. To ensure equity and accessibility, the degrees are structured to allow students with existing Applied Associate degrees to transfer their specialized credits cleanly into the upper-level (3000 and 4000-level) courses.

Why the Rebrand and Expansion Matter

According to Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, changing the name to Houston City College is critical to improving enrollment, removing the historical stigma sometimes associated with two-year institutions, and accurately reflecting the school's new academic tier.

By offering bachelor's degrees at community college tuition rates, the institution provides a vital, cost-effective alternative to traditional public and private four-year universities. It allows Houstonians to graduate with lower student debt while stepping directly into high-paying, high-demand fields like robotics, cloud computing, and healthcare leadership.
