She’s back. They’re all back. And I am not okay.
After months of teasing, FX has dropped the official trailer for American Horror Story: 13 — and it is the reunion season longtime fans have been manifesting since forever. Angela Bassett. Jessica Lange. Sarah Paulson. Evan Peters. Kathy Bates. Emma Roberts. Gabourey Sidibe. Plus a lineup of new faces, including filmmaker John Waters, bloodied and wielding a knife.
The season premieres Thursday, September 24 at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu (streaming on Disney+ internationally), and the trailer makes one thing clear: Ryan Murphy heard everything we ever asked for.
The “Avengers” season is real
Murphy has been calling AHS: 13 his “Avengers” season, and now we see why. This isn’t a sequel to one season — it’s a crossover pulling characters from across the show’s 15-year run. Per Murphy’s own rundown to Variety: “They love Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and they loved Cult.” So he’s bringing all of them back.
And the cast isn’t just returning — they’re doing the most. Lange plays four different characters. Paulson plays six. Peters plays five. At one point in the trailer, Peters is literally playing two different characters and talking to himself.
The trailer opens with Lange’s Elsa Mars — yes, Freak Show’s Elsa — welcoming us to “the greatest show on earth.” Then Peters’ Hotel villain James Patrick March warns that it’s “witch-hunting season.” Paulson’s Cordelia Goode senses something coming: “I feel a harbinger of our doom… so much terrifying and vengeful death… something wicked this way comes.”
Lange closes the trailer with what might be the line of the fall TV season: “If you’re gonna rise up and rule the world, you better get a damn sense of humor.”
The returning legends (a.k.a. the group chat)
Let’s do the roll call, because it’s stacked. Lange appears as Constance Langdon (Murder House), Fiona Goode (Coven), and Elsa Mars (Freak Show) — three fan-favorite eras in one woman.
Paulson brings back Cordelia Goode (Coven), Lana Winters (Asylum), and Sally McKenna (Hotel). Peters is Kai Anderson (Cult), Tate Langdon (Murder House), James March (Hotel), and the Rubber Man. And Angela Bassett returns as the one and only Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen of Coven — which is honestly all I needed to hear.
Also back: Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Frances Conroy, Jamie Brewer, John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the Clown, Mena Suvari as the Black Dahlia, and Orlando Jones — who steps in as Papa Legba following the passing of the great Lance Reddick, who made the role iconic back in Coven. Rest in peace to a legend; Jones has big shoes to fill and I think he’s up for it. New blood includes John Waters as a phlebotomist named Mr. Phibes (a wink to Vincent Price’s classic horror role), Alex Consani, Paul Anthony Kelly — who takes Lange for a spin on the dance floor in the trailer — Avantika Vandanapu, Joey Pollari, and Madelaine Petsch.
One name you won’t see: Ariana Grande, who was previously announced but exited over tour scheduling conflicts. Murphy has said he’d like to revisit the role he envisioned for her in a future season.

For the Coven, Murder House, and Freak Show girlies
Let’s be honest about who this season is for: us. The fans who ranked Coven, Murder House, and Freak Show at the top and never shut up about it. Murphy literally said he knows which seasons the fans liked most, and he built the season around them.
The trailer is pure fanservice in the best way — Lange in black latex, Cordelia sensing doom, Twisty back on the prowl, Marie Laveau looking unbothered and powerful. Murphy has stressed this isn’t just a Coven reboot, though. “Everybody thinks it’s a coven season and it’s not,” he said. “It’s all the seasons… They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil.”
The new season also leans into its own number: 13. The trailer frames it as “everyone’s most feared number,” and Waters’ character warns that 13 “stands for instability, chaos.” Thirteen half-hour episodes, premiering with three on night one, three more in week two, then double episodes weekly until the finale on October 29 — just in time for Halloween. The math is mathing.
Why this one feels different
AHS has had ups and downs — we don’t talk about some of the middle seasons — but there’s something electric about this homecoming. It’s been years since Lange carried a season, and watching her play four characters at once, including a dance-floor scene, feels like a gift to everyone who watched her chew scenery as Fiona Goode back in 2013.
The show has earned this victory lap, too: more than 100 Emmy nominations since 2011, over 700 million hours streamed worldwide, and the longest-running hour-long series in FX history. Fifteen years in, it’s still the anthology every other anthology is measured against.
So light your candles, draw your pentagrams, and clear your Thursdays. September 24 can’t come fast enough.
