  • Job Corps Paused by Department of Labor

Imagine this: You finally have a safe place to live. You are training for your dream job or a job better than fast-food. Then, out of nowhere, someone tells you: “Pack up. You have to leave. Now.”

That’s the real nightmare for 25,000 students right now. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has paused almost all Job Corps centers across the country. The reason? Major budget cuts.

    What is Job Corps?

Job Corps is a FREE government program for teens and young adults (16-24) who are struggling. It helps people who didn’t finish high school due to personal circumstances. These individuals faced challenges during that time. Some have nowhere safe to live. Others can’t find a good job.

The program offers free housing amenities (living in campus dorms) and free meals. It provides assistance towards earning a GED. There is hands-on job training for the workforce. Support from academic and mental health counselors is also available.

For many students, Job Corps was their only lifeline to a better future.

    What Happened?

Recently, all centers must close and send their students back to their homes on record by June 30, 2025. Only 24 centers ran by the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) will stay open. Students got almost no warning – some had just hours to pack. Many couldn’t grab their stuff: meds, IDs, clothes, or school certificates got locked inside.

    Why Did This Happen?

According to the Department of Labor’s press release (dated 5/29):

The Job Corps program has faced significant financial challenges under its current operating structure. In PY 2024, the program operated at a $140 million deficit, requiring the Biden administration to implement a pause in center operations to complete the program year.

    Next Steps

The 5/29 press release included FAQs about Job Corps’ recent pause; covering topics such as transportation, transfer credits, and other next steps:

These young people were working hard for a better future. Without the stress of bills or housing, they could focus on developing their workforce skills. However, budget cuts are pushing them back into the jungles they were trying to escape.

  • Lil Wayne’s Producer Sues Universal Music Over Unpaid Royalties

Looks like Drake isn’t the only one with their foot on UMG’s neck. Now a music producer is asking to be paid what he’s owed.

Deezle (real name Darius Harrison), a producer who worked with Lil Wayne, is suing Universal Music Group (UMG). He claims they haven’t paid him millions in royalties. He is owed this money for his work on albums like Tha Carter III (2008) and others.

Deezle and his company, Drum Major Music, recently filed the lawsuit in a New York court. This time, they are targeting only Universal Music. This isn’t his first legal fight. Back in 2008, Deezle sued Lil Wayne over similar issues. The case was settled in 2012. Despite that agreement, Deezle says the royalty problems never fully went away.

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III album

According to the lawsuit, Deezle signed a deal with Lil Wayne’s label, Young Money Entertainment, in 2007. Under that deal, he helped create six songs for Tha Carter III, including the hit “Lollipop.” The agreement promised him regular royalty payments and detailed financial reports. Universal Music handles distribution for Young Money and Cash Money Records. It was supposed to send these payments. However, Deezle claims he hasn’t received royalties in over a decade.

The lawsuit argues that after the 2012 settlement, Universal briefly sent payment statements but stopped almost immediately. Deezle also says he’s owed money for work on rapper Birdman’s 2005 album. This is for Fast Money. He is also owed money for a song on The Longest Yard soundtrack.

Deezle is now asking for at least $6 million in damages. He joins other artists, like Iggy Azalea and Limp Bizkit, who’ve accused Universal of failing to pay royalties properly. Universal Music has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit.

  • Honoring the Black Slaves Who Fought and Died in America’s Wars: A Memorial Day Tribute

Memorial Day is a time to remember all the men and women. They gave their lives in service to the United States. But the Black slaves who fought and died in America’s wars are often left out of the spotlight. This is especially true during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. These brave individuals, though enslaved, risked everything for freedom and a chance at a better life.

Black Slaves in the Revolutionary War (1775–1783)

When the Revolutionary War began, both the British and American armies promised freedom to slaves who joined their side. Thousands of enslaved Black men chose to fight. Crispus Attucks was a man of African and Native American descent. He was one of the earliest known martyrs of the American Revolution. He is remembered as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre of 1770. This event helped ignite the Revolutionary War. About 5,000 Black men fought for the Continental Army during the war. Many were promised their freedom in exchange for their service. On the other side, some enslaved individuals joined the British forces. The British also offered liberty to those who escaped and supported their cause. These individuals became known as “Black Loyalists.” After the war, many were relocated. They moved to places like Canada and Sierra Leone.

Black Slaves in the Civil War (1861–1865)

The Civil War marked a major shift for African Americans. More than 180,000 Black men served in the Union Army, and many of them were formerly enslaved. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863. It officially allowed Black men to enlist in the Union military. This provided them a path to fight for their freedom and the freedom of others. One of the most well-known Black regiments was the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Their courageous efforts, particularly during the attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, were later depicted in the movie Glory. Many of these soldiers were once enslaved. They fought with unmatched bravery and determination. Their efforts helped to change the course of the war.

    After the War

Despite their sacrifices, many Black veterans faced racism and were denied the same honors and benefits as their white counterparts. Yet, their courage and service became a foundation for the civil rights movements that would follow. Their stories are a testament to resilience, strength, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America.

    Remembering Their Sacrifice

Today, Memorial Day is a chance to honor well-known heroes. It’s also an opportunity to honor those whose names have been lost to history. Black slaves who became soldiers showed incredible bravery and a deep desire for freedom. As we visit cemeteries or watch parades, we should also reflect on the unnamed soldiers who died without recognition. We should remember the families who never got to see their loved ones return. We should consider the fight for freedom that continues even today.

    Conclusion

On this Memorial Day, let us honor all who died for this country. We should include the brave Black slaves who fought in hopes of a better future. Their legacy is part of America’s story, and we must never forget them.

  • Digital Deception Chronicles: Spiteful Seduction

In today’s world, social media and online communities have become powerful places. People connect and share stories there. Sometimes, they do things that cross the line. A recent story made its way around the internet. It shocked many people. Others were left wondering how far some folks will go for attention, revenge, or drama.

This is the story of a young woman, Doctor V., a medical school student, who was part of an online social group called the Fleek Girlz. The group often joked around and trolled other content creators within the virtual community. Even went to extensive lengths to embarrass other by doxxing their personal information, background, recordings, body cam footage and more. They have been know to cause harm in people’s personal lives. Some of them have even gone to jail for warrants, driving while under the influence, and more. But things took a darker turn. They started focusing on two content creators in the community named DeeJay and Kadie O. Virtually, their relationship was building and in real life, it was budding. The Fleek Girlz didn’t like Kadie O. They felt she set up a famous influencer in the city to be killed. She was outspoken, liked, and confident, and for some reason, this rubbed them the wrong way.

One day, the Fleek Girlz concocted a plot to send Doctor V. chat on the back end and eventually seduce DeeJay. Doctor V. called DeeJay at work letting him know she was on the way to see family and his city is along the way so she could make a pitstop. Doctor V. drove three hours away to pickup DeeJay from work and get directions to an abandoned apartment. There, they made love in a bando. Doctor V. even recorded herself with him to send to the leader of the Fleek Girlz, MissNunnChin. The goal? To film it and put it online just to upset Kadie O. It wasn’t about love, attraction, or even friendship. It was about revenge and pettiness.

Doctor V. felt powerful doing this making constant public statements to Kadie O saying “You will always be sloppy seconds, Kadie! I had him first!” Maybe she thought it would earn her respect or make her seem bold. So she made the trip, met the man, and did exactly what was planned. The video was posted online. People saw it. Kadie found out. The community buzzed with gossip.

But the plan didn’t go the way the group exp began to mock her. Comments poured in calling Doctor V. “desperate,” “thirsty,” and “whorish.” Some said she had no self-respect. Others said she was being used and didn’t even realize it. Even people outside the group thought the whole thing was wrong and sad.

In the end, Kadie O. wasn’t the one embarrassed. Doctor V., the one who made the trip became the joke. She had gone out of her way to ruin someone else’s relationship but ended up damaging her own image instead.

This story reminds us of how dangerous online groups can become when people lose sight of basic respect and values. Doing things for clout or to hurt someone else can quickly backfire. And sometimes, the one who tries to shame someone ends up being shamed the most.

Let this be a lesson. Don’t let the internet push you into doing things. Avoid doing things that go against your worth. The clout isn’t worth the cost.

And LADIES, using your sugar walls and womb out of spite and hate for another woman is low-vibrational and low-class. You should be ashamed to even think of it as a way to dominate a situationship.

  • Slashing AmeriCorps: Staff Reductions and Shutdowns Put National Volunteer Work at Risk

Recent reports show that AmeriCorps, a U.S. government program supporting volunteer work has faced significant changes. In April 2025, about 75% of its full-time staff were placed on administrative leave following actions by the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This decision also led to the shutdown of the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), which includes the FEMA Corps program that helps communities recover from disasters . These cuts have raised concerns about the program’s ability to continue its mission of addressing critical needs like education, poverty, and disaster relief through volunteer efforts.

Key points about the recent cuts include staff reduction, program closures, and impact. In April 2025, 75% of AmeriCorps employees were put on paid leave, disrupting operations. The NCCC and FEMA Corps, critical for disaster recovery, were shut down. These changes could weaken AmeriCorps’ ability to support communities during emergencies and deliver long-term projects.

    What Is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a federal program created in 1993 under President Bill Clinton to unite Americans in volunteer service. Its goal is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and promote civic engagement. Over 5 million Americans have participated in its programs, which focus on education, environmental conservation, public health, and disaster response.

The idea of national service dates back to programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps (1930s) and Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA, 1965), which aimed to combat poverty. In 1993, the National and Community Service Trust Act merged VISTA and other programs into AmeriCorps. This created a unified agency to manage volunteer initiatives like AmeriCorps NCCC (disaster relief) and AmeriCorps State and National (local community projects). Over the years, AmeriCorps expanded to include efforts like addressing the opioid crisis, supporting STEM education, and responding to COVID-19. By 2016, it had engaged 1 million members.

  • Student Loan Collections Are Back: What Borrowers Should Do Now

After a three-year pause, the U.S. Department of Education is restarting harsh measures to collect defaulted federal student loans. Actions like seizing tax refunds, garnishing wages, and withholding Social Security benefits will resume, ending a temporary halt put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s what borrowers need to know—and how to protect themselves.

    Why Are Collections Restarting Now?

During the pandemic, the government paused most aggressive collection tactics to ease financial strain on borrowers. But as federal relief programs wind down, the Education Department is shifting back to pre-pandemic rules. Officials argue this move is part of a “return to normal,” but critics warn it could push already struggling borrowers deeper into hardship.

“Beginning May 5, the department will begin involuntary collection through the Treasury Department’s offset program, which withholds payments from the government — including tax refunds, federal salaries and other benefits — from people with past-due debts to the government,” the department said in a statement. Wages will be garnished following a 30-day warning, it added. — NBC News

    How Does This Affect You?

If your federal student loans are in default (meaning you’ve missed payments for at least 270 days), you could face:

    • Tax Refund Offsets: The government may take your federal tax refund to repay your debt.
    • Wage Garnishment: Up to 15% of your paycheck could be withheld.
    • Social Security Garnishment: Monthly benefits may be reduced (applies to older borrowers).

What Can You Do to Avoid Collections?

Don’t panic—there are ways to get out of default and stop these penalties:

    1. Loan Rehabilitation: Agree to make nine affordable monthly payments (as low as $5) over ten months. Successfully completing this removes the default from your credit report.
    2. Consolidation: Combine your loans into a new Direct Consolidation Loan. You’ll need to either make three on-time payments or enroll in an income-driven repayment plan.
    3. Contact Your Servicer: Reach out to discuss options like payment pauses, reduced payments, or alternative plans.

    Critics Raise Concerns

Advocates for borrowers argue that restarting these tactics ignores the ongoing struggles many face. “Taking money from Social Security or wages could devastate families still recovering from the pandemic,” said one nonprofit representative. They’re urging the government to expand relief programs instead.

    Stay Proactive

If you’re at risk of default—or already there—act now:

    • Visit StudentAid.gov to explore repayment plans.
    • Call your loan servicer to discuss solutions.
    • Consider free help from a nonprofit credit counselor.

    The Bottom Line

While the return of collections is stressful, borrowers have tools to fight back. Addressing the issue early can help you avoid penalties and regain control of your finances. Stay informed, explore your options, and don’t wait—the sooner you act, the more you can protect yourself.

  • Houston ISD Fraud: The $6 Million Scandal Uncovered

Imagine millions of dollars meant for school repairs, classrooms, and playgrounds vanishing into the pockets of corrupt officials. That’s exactly what happened in Houston, where a jaw-dropping fraud scheme involving a top school administrator and a contractor just ended with guilty verdicts. After a dramatic four-week trial, Brian Busby, the former Chief Operating Officer of Houston ISD (HISD), and Anthony Hutchison, a contractor, were convicted of 33 federal charges, including bribery, wire fraud, and witness tampering. Let’s break down how they pulled off this nine-year heist—and how they got caught.

The Players: Who’s Who in the Scandal

    • Brian Busby: The man in charge of HISD’s $260 million budget and 7,000 employees. He was supposed to ensure taxpayer money went to schools—but instead, he allegedly pocketed cash and even got free home renovations. His salary at the time was over $150,000/year while working for the district.
    • Anthony Hutchison: A contractor whose companies, Southwest Wholesale and Just Construction, scored lucrative HISD contracts. Prosecutors say he overbilled the district by millions and paid bribes to keep the scheme alive.
    • The “Bribe Squad”: Five former HISD officials admitted to taking bribes and testified against Busby and Hutchison. Their roles?
      • Rhonda Skillern-Jones: Former HISD Board of Education president, caught accepting $12,000 in a Walmart parking lot.
      • Derrick Sanders: Officer of Construction Services, pressured to approve Hutchison’s inflated bids.
      • Alfred Hoskins: General Manager of Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations, who greenlit unnecessary projects.
      • Gerron Hall and Luis Tovar: Area Managers for Maintenance (South and North), who allegedly rubber-stamped Hutchison’s work in exchange for cash.

The Scheme: Cash, Contracts, and Cover-Ups
This wasn’t just a few under-the-table deals. The scam ran like a well-oiled machine:

    1. Rigged Contracts: Busby strong-armed HISD staff to award Hutchison’s companies projects, bypassing competitive bidding. After Hurricane Harvey, Hutchison scored even bigger contracts for repairs.
    2. Bribes in Parking Lots: Skillern-Jones testified that Busby handed her $12,000 in cash in a Walmart parking lot after Hutchison’s company completed two school projects.
    3. Lavish Trips and Gambling: Some officials received bribes during wild Vegas getaways. One witness recalled Hutchison yelling “next!” to signal it was Busby’s turn for a cash payout.
    4. Overbilling Bonanza: Hutchison’s companies charged HISD double for supplies like lawn care and construction materials, pocketing over $6 million in fraudulent charges.
    5. Tax Tricks: Busby deposited nearly $3 million in unexplained cash into 18 bank accounts. Hutchison wrote fake checks to cover bribes and gambling debts, then lied on his taxes.

Gerry Monroe, a community activist from Houston’s Third Ward, was known as The Five Star General on social media and YouTube before he passed in 2024. He has been discussing the buildup for years. Here is a video from three years ago. It covers the wire Rhonda Skillern Jones was wearing while collecting the bribe money.

The Cover-Up: “Just Say It Was for Gambling!”
When the FBI started investigating in 2018, Busby and Hutchison panicked. They pressured witnesses to lie, telling one official to claim a damning handwritten ledger (detailing bribes) was just “gambling notes”. But the evidence was overwhelming:

    • The Ledger: Found in Hutchison’s home, it listed every bribe payment and project.
    • Text Messages and Bank Records: Showed a trail of cash deposits, fake invoices, and cozy communication between the duo.

    The Fallout: What Happens Now?

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen presided over the trial and has set sentencing for July 28. At that time, Busby and Hutchison face up to five, 10 and 20 years, respectively, for the conspiracy, bribery and witness tampering charges. Hutchison also faces up to 20 years for each count of wire fraud. All charges also carry a $250,000 maximum possible fine. Skillern-Jones, 39, Houston; Sanders, 50, Hoskins, 58, Hall, 48, all of Missouri City; and Tovar, 39, Huffman have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charges. They face up to five years in prison. — U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Texas

U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei called the scheme a “betrayal” of Houston’s students, while the FBI vowed to root out corruption. HISD is Texas’s largest school district, serving predominantly low-income students. Every dollar diverted to luxury trips or home renovations meant fewer resources for classrooms, teachers, and kids. The trial had more than 50 witnesses. There was a mountain of evidence, from Vegas selfies to parking lot cash drops. All of this revealed a picture of greed that’s so bold it’s unbelievable.

  • HISD cuts Wraparound Services for new integrated support model

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is making big changes to how it supports students’ needs outside the classroom. The district recently announced it will close its Wraparound Services department, which has helped students and families with challenges like mental health, housing, and food since 2020. Instead, HISD plans to focus on expanding “Sunrise Centers” and a new “integrated support model.” Let’s break down what this means for families and why the shift is happening.

What Was the Wraparound Services Department?
Created in 2020, the Wraparound Services team aimed to address barriers affecting students’ success, like unstable housing, hunger, or lack of counseling. The department worked with community groups to connect families to resources, ensuring kids could focus on learning. For example, they helped students access free meals, mental health care, or even temporary housing. The goal was to support the “whole child,” not just their academic needs.

Wraparound Services at Westbury High School in Houston ISD

    Why the Change?
HISD says the shift is about streamlining help and reaching more families. By closing the department, the district plans to save money and avoid “overlapping” services. Instead, resources will go toward expanding Sunrise Centers. These centers are hubs located at certain schools offering healthcare, counseling, and other supports. The district plans to place support teams directly in schools. This will be done through its new “integrated model.” In this model, staff like counselors and social workers will work together to address student needs.

What’s Next: Sunrise Centers and Integrated Support
Sunrise Centers aren’t new—they already exist in some HISD schools. Under the new plan, these centers will grow to offer more services, including medical care, tutoring, and job training for parents. Meanwhile, the integrated support model means each school will have a team dedicated to connecting students with help, whether it’s a counselor for mental health or a social worker for housing assistance. HISD believes this approach will make support faster and easier to access.

    Mixed Reactions from the Community
Not everyone is convinced the changes will work. Critics worry closing Wraparound Services could leave gaps, especially for vulnerable families who relied on the department’s specialized help. Community groups fear staff layoffs (some jobs will be cut, while others move to new roles) might disrupt trust built with families. On the other hand, supporters argue the new model could help more students by embedding support directly into schools. HISD leaders say no services will be lost—just delivered differently.

    Looking Ahead
HISD’s changes reflect a bigger debate in education: how best to support kids facing tough challenges outside school. While the district promises better efficiency and wider reach, the true test will be whether families feel the new system meets their needs. For now, the focus is on transitioning smoothly—and ensuring no student falls through the cracks.
