Homecoming events are usually times of pure joy, reunion, and celebration, especially at a historic institution like Howard University in Washington D.C. However, a recent incident just off campus cast a shadow over what was meant to be a weekend of festivities.
The Incident: What Happened?
Friday evening, the tragic event unfolded near the edge of the Howard University campus, specifically around the area of Georgia Avenue and Howard Place. It happened while crowds of people were leaving a Homecoming event called Yardfest. Gunfire erupted, shocking those who were celebrating nearby.
D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith quickly confirmed that five people were shot—four adults and one teenager. Thankfully, the chief stated that all five victims are expected to be okay, with their injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Who Were the Victims?
It is important to know that none of the people shot were Howard University students. However, one of the victims was a student visiting from Morgan State University, a school Howard was slated to play in the Homecoming game. The four adults included three men and one woman, in addition to the teenage boy.
Witnesses described the scene as “pandemonium” as dozens of people ran from the shooting area toward nearby businesses.
Quick Action from Police
The good news is that D.C. police acted quickly. Officers, who were already patrolling the area, responded immediately to the sound of gunfire. Police Chief Smith reported that they have since arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting. Furthermore, law enforcement recovered three weapons from the scene. One of the suspects was reportedly captured in the parking lot of a nearby McDonald’s.
Because of these swift arrests, police stated that they believe there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.
A Message to the Community
The shooting, though located off-campus, was a disturbing event during a major community celebration. Chief Smith strongly addressed the issue of gun violence in the city. She emphasized that law enforcement will not tolerate individuals bringing firearms into the area, especially during major events. She promised that police presence would be extra strong throughout the rest of the Homecoming weekend to ensure the safety of students, alumni, and families.
Howard University’s Homecoming remains a cherished tradition, a time for alumni from across the nation to return and celebrate. While this incident was upsetting, the quick response from police helped restore a sense of safety, allowing the community to move forward with the rest of their planned, joyful weekend.
