MCKINNEY, Texas — A young man named Karmelo Sincere Anthony, who is 19 years old, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Just one day after the trial ended, his lawyers started the process to ask a higher court to look at the case again to try to change the outcome.
According to official Collin County court records, his team filed the paperwork to start this review on Wednesday, June 10. They also asked the court to give him a free lawyer for this next step because he cannot afford one.
What Happened and the Sentence
The case is about the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf on April 2, 2025. Metcalf was a student at Frisco Memorial High School. He was stabbed and killed under a tent during a rainy track meet at a stadium in Frisco.
Anthony, who was 17 at the time and went to a different high school nearby, said he only used the knife to protect himself after being pushed.
However, the lawyers for the state said he had no good reason to use a knife. A medical expert testified that the knife went straight into Metcalf’s heart, and no one could have saved him.
The trial took place in front of Judge John R. Roach, Jr. The jury talked for three hours before deciding that Anthony was guilty of murder.
During the last part of the trial:
- Anthony’s team asked for a lighter punishment. His mother talked about how sorry her son was for what happened.
- The state’s lawyers asked for a life sentence. They told the jury to focus on the young life that was lost.
In the end, the jury decided that Anthony must spend 35 years in a Texas state prison.

What Comes Next
Right after the sentencing on Tuesday afternoon, Anthony was taken to the local county jail, Collin County. On Wednesday, June 10, he was moved to a Texas state prison called the Wallace Pack Unit near Navasota, Texas. A new prison photo of him was taken when he arrived.

His lawyers filed a notice to appeal, which is very common in big cases. This lets a higher court check the trial for any legal mistakes, but it does not mean he gets a new trial right away. The process can take many months or even years.
Anthony must serve at least half of his 35-year sentence before he can ask to be let out early on parole.
WHY WAS HE TRANSFERRED SO QUICKLY? Sentenced, convicted, booked, and sent to prison IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS.
